Cat scratch disease (CSD) or cat scratch fever as it is called is caused by a bacteria present in most cats’ body. Almost half of all cats carry this infection at some point of time. The cats are just carriers of the infection. It does not affect the cats but the scratch or bite of an infected cat may cause sickness in human beings. The symptoms of cat scratch disease include swollen lymph nodes (especially around the head, neck and upper limbs), fever, headache, loss of appetite and fatigue. However, for people with weak immune system the symptoms may lead to something more serious. The only way to avoid CSD is not to indulge in rough play with cats. In case of scratches or bite from a cat wash it with soap and water immediately. If the scratch or bite gets infected or in the case of having the symptoms of CSD, consult your doctor as soon as possible.
